A rich curriculum

Our curriculum is one of the richest in the United States. We offer a wide selection of language courses, in Russian, Polish, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Czech, Ukrainian, and Old Church Slavonic. You can study Russian and pan-Slavic linguistics, and literature, culture, and film culture in all of our areas. Our department is home to the second largest selection of GenEd courses of any department in the entire IU system.

Co-curricular activities

Students studying our languages and cultures enjoy a wide variety of co-curricular activities showcasing our region. These are designed to enrich and expand your education and experiences—from holiday celebrations throughout the year, to films at the IU Cinema, to classical music and ballet, guest speakers, and more. Compete in the National Russian Essay Contest and research essay competition, or apply for the Dobro Slovo National Slavic Honor Society.

Study abroad

Students can choose from many study abroad programs in our region in the fall, spring, and summer semesters through IU co-sponsored programs or by finding approved non-IU programs, funding them through a variety of scholarships. You can also decide to study at IU over the summer in our renowned Language Workshop. It offers six years of Russian and a rotating assortment of first-year courses.

Library resources

The Slavic and East European Collection, located in the Herman B Wells Library, holds over 700,000 volumes. Its shelf space, which is measures in miles, grows by over 5,000 volumes a year. Managed by a full-time Slavic librarian, the collection maintains over 1,000 serial subscriptions. Other specialty libraries and collections make IU an exceptional Research 1 university.
