Ph.D. research requirement
Russian Literature Ph.D. students are required to do a semester-long independent study with a faculty mentor, culminating in an essay suitable for submission to a scholarly journal. This Ph.D. research requirement is to be fulfilled prior to the qualifying examination, typically in the first semester of the Ph.D program.
Undergraduate research opportunities
Several of our undergraduate classes have students complete research projects. For example, in SLAV-T241 (Central and East European Immigration and Ethnic Identity in the U.S.), students design, conduct, and present original ethnographic research on a Central and East European ethnic community in the United States.
Students with advanced Russian language skills participate in research at the IU Russian Studies Workshop. Many IU faculty who specialize in Russia or post-Soviet countries collaborate with our Russian language students (e.g.: social science research with Regina Smyth, summer 2020.)
The Daniel Armstrong Memorial Research Paper Competition for undergraduate students is conducted during the spring semester.
