There are many options available to help fund your undergraduate experience. In addition to scholarship opportunities offered by Indiana University and the College of Arts and Sciences, you might find employment in a work-study position or paid internship.
Federal Work Study (FWS) Positions with SLAV
If you are interested in federal work study, make sure to fill out your FAFSA (and indicate your interest in work study when you fill it out) by the deadline (usually April 15 every year): https://studentcentral.indiana.edu/pay-for-college/funding-options/work-study.html
If you are notified that you qualify for work study and you are interested in work study opportunities in the Slavic department, contact SLAV director of undergraduate studies Dr. Jeff Holdeman (jeffhold@iu.edu) immediately, so that he can tell you about what opportunities might be available (like research assistant with a faculty member, perhaps working for Slavica Publishers, or doing special projects for the department). We have had positions in the past but no students who were eligible, so there is work to be done.
For 2024–2025, the maximum compensation for fall–spring was $4,000. If you have completed it and register for at least one credit hour in the summer, you may be able to complete summer FWS as well. Tell your FWS employer to contact IUBOSFA to request a summer federal work-study allocation for you.
Scholarships
The College of Arts and Sciences, of which Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures is a part, offers more than 350 scholarships and awards to students. Incoming students who are directly admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences with Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures as their intended major may be eligible for a number of merit-based scholarships within the College.
High achieving students may also be recognized for Academic Excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences, or be eligible for admission to the Hutton Honors College.
Indiana University also offers many resources to help you fund your education. Visit the Office of Scholarships website for information on these and other opportunities.
