SLAV-C366

Course Description

This course introduces and treats the most important trends and movements within the history of Czech cinematography while placing films in their historical, cultural, and political contexts. It is slightly different from standard courses on the history of film. Not only will you learn to talk and write about film, you will also be introduced to the region of the Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia and Central Europe, its history, geography, ethnography, and languages. We also discuss how Czech films capture the life of Czech society during different periods. All films are subtitled; no knowledge of the Czech language is required.
