This seminar will explore the thriving field of translation studies and the central role it plays in a variety of literary fields. We will begin with a survey of the history of translation, examining foundational texts and statements, after which we will move through more modern developments in the field, all the while considering sample translations and how these trends resonate with others in contemporary criticism, including deconstruction, gender studies, and post-colonialism. Along the way, we will develop an ever more complex understanding of concepts such as translatability, naturalization, foreignization,and reception. Participants of the course should have a good knowledge of English and at least one other language. Coursework will include keeping a reflective journal, a formal proposal of a seminar project, an oral presentation, and a final paper.
