What can film tell us about culture, society, and the human experience? How do films represent and imagine local histories and subjectivities in distant corners of the world? With a focus on the region of Yugoslavia and its successor states (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia), this course introduces students to the most important trends, movements, and filmmakers in the history of Yugoslav film. Through lectures, discussions, film screenings, and written assignments students will gain knowledge about Yugoslav (and post-Yugoslav) culture and history, learn how to analyze the formal properties of film, and develop the skills needed to talk and write about film critically, confidently, and effectively. This course is open to all students with an interest in Yugoslav and South Slavic film and culture. No previous knowledge in the area is required. COLL (CASE) Culture Studies: Global Civ & Culture, COLL (CASE) A&H Breadth of Inquiry credit.
