Overview Welcome to first-year Czech! SLAV-C102 is the second course in a four-part sequence (C101, C102, C201, C202) that fulfills the foreign language requirement in the general education curriculum. These courses teach the four basic language skills in Czech: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Major aspects of Czech culture are also incorporated throughout the instructional materials. Course Objectives After successfully completing this course, students will be able to: * demonstrate and build upon the skills and lexical fields acquired in C101/501; * distinguish and produce Czech sounds and voicing assimilation, including how they are represented orthographically; * discuss future plans (narrate in the future); * indicate motion (unidirectional, multidirectional/adirectional) and destinations (places, people, events), and discuss travel plans; * respond to and extend visit invitations; * discuss home furnishings and Czech housing, as well as read and respond to housing ads; * describe their health and illnesses, as well as their locations and treatments; * express their needs, wishes, and preferences, as well as courtesy, greetings, and well-wishes; * receive and compose letters, e-mails, and phone calls in the Czech style; * express recipients and benefactors of giving and actions; * discuss occupations and look for and apply for employment; * further navigate Czech life linguistically and culturally, comparing and contrasting it to American life; * receive and process oral and written information in an increasingly wider range of contexts, forms, and registers; and * express themselves, their biography, and interests, in speaking and writing.
