Throughout the modern period, the Balkan Peninsula has been shaped and reshaped by struggles for self-determination, revolution, and war. At each turn, art, literature, and film have played outsized roles in illustrating and propelling the desires and cautionary tales that underpin these moments of radical change. Moving chronologically from the nineteenth century to the present, this introductory survey explores constructions of national (and international) identity, socialist-era art and literature, dissident culture and critique, and the response of artists, writers, and filmmakers to the civil wars the 1990s and the socioeconomic pressures of today. This course is open to all students with an interest in Balkan and South Slavic culture. No previous knowledge in the area is required. COLL (CASE) Culture Studies: Global Civ & Culture, COLL (CASE) A&H Breadth of Inquiry credit.
