The course will explore the development of the Russian literary language chronologically. It will combine the study of Russian historical grammar, basic facts about Old Church Slavonic (OCS), and how these languages influenced the development of the Russian literary language. We will learn all this in the context of Russian history and literature. There will be meetings devoted to an overview of the socio-political and literary context which led to the changes in Russian of the different historical periods. In this sense, this course also serves as a review of Russian history. There will be meeting(s) for each period that will be devoted to the literature of that period. In this sense, the course also serves as a cursory survey of Russian culture.
