This semester we will explore aspects of Czech life during peacetime and wartime by working on two films, Lásky jedné plavovlásky (1965, Milo¿ Forman) and Musíme si pomáhat (2000, Jan H¿ebejk). We will also read Jan Neruda¿s Povídky malostranské as well as continue our culture and grammar work with¿ Textbook ¿esky krok za krokem/ Czech Step by Step (Akropolis, 2016) along with the ¿esky krok za krokem pracovní se¿it, Language Goals:(1) to discuss in more detail and at a deeper level than you have previously issues relating to Czech life, culture, and history; (2) ) to develop your ability to communicate in Czech as a literate and culturally aware user of the language, especially expanding your ability to deal with factual topics; (3) to extend both your range of vocabulary and structural accuracy in interpreting and using targeted grammatical forms; (4) to review problem areas of Czech grammar and introduce some advanced topics in grammar and syntax from the point of view of how forms reflect and affect meaning. The focus of daily activities will be active language use and comprehension in paired, small group or class discussion (i.e., often NOT mechanical practice, although there will be considerable work on grammar). Actually, since there are only two of you, you¿ll most likely work in pairs rather than ¿small groups.¿ Grammar Focus o the imperative mood o aby, a¿ and ¿e clauses o the vocative case o the genitive plural o the nominative plural of masculine animate and neuter nouns (this can be more annoying than it sounds) o the pronoun sv¿j and svoje o comparison of adverbs o even more work with který clauses
