C201 is the third course in a four-part sequence (C101, C102, C201, C202) that fulfills the foreign language requirement in the general education curriculum. These courses teach the four basic language skills in Czech: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Major cultural aspects of the Czech Republic are also incorporated throughout the course. This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of the Czech language in several core competencies. Specifically, the five areas of assessment are: listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production, and writing. Textbook Cesky krok za krokem/ Czech Step by Step (Akropolis, 2016) along with the Cesky krok za krokem pracovní sesit. Recommended Fronek, Josef. 2013 (revised ed.). English-Czech & Czech-English Dictionary. Leda. Naughton, James. 2005. Czech: An Essential Grammar. Routledge. Learning outcomes: Listening The student can understand the main points of standard speech on matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. The student can understand the main points of many radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. Reading The student can understand texts that consist mainly of everyday or job-related language. The student can understand the description of events, feelings, and wishes in personal letters. Spoken Interaction The student can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in areas where the language is spoken. The student can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest, or pertinent to every life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events). Spoken Production The student can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, and their hopes and ambitions. The student can give brief reasons and explanations for their opinions and plans. The student can narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film, and can describe their reactions. Writing The student can write simple, connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. The student can write personal letters describing experiences and impressions.
