We are very happy to announce that Dr. Maria (Manya) Carlson, who received her Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures at Indiana University in 1982, has provided a generous donation to establish “The Maria Carlson Graduate Student Enhancement Fund” in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures. Dr. Carlson, who wrote a dissertation entitled, The Conquest of Chaos: Esoteric Philosophy and the Development of Andrei Belyi’s Theory of Symbolism as a World View (1901-1910), is Professor emerita of Slavic Languages & Literatures and Director emerita of the Center for Russian & East European Studies at the University of Kansas. Since her retirement in 2014, she has continued to write and publish, and she is currently working on a survey of East Slavic mythology and folklore. The Carlson Fund will support conference travel expenses for graduate students pursuing their masters or Ph.D. degrees within our department.
