Course Description

This course will introduce students to a wide selection of Russian folk tales, to their structure, and to their aesthetic and sociocultural values. The course focuses on three types of folk tales: animal tales, fairy tales, and behavioral tales. Students will learn various approaches and theories of analyzing and interpreting folk tales (e.g., stylistic approach, structural approach, formalist approach, thematic approach, and psychological approach). Additionally, we will examine the influence of folk tales in music, opera, ballet, in painting, posters, folk art, and in film. Students will be able to apply the analytical skills acquired in this course to a wide range of disciplines and analyze and interpret a wide variety of texts.
